The old Solex 30 was replaced with a Webber 44 IDF
Drawing heat from the cylinder heads to warm the intake manofold and carb makes a huge improvement in the drivability of a single carbureted motor.
I've replaced the chrome fan shroud with a cast aluminum one that I bought on E-Bay.
A mirror polished stainless steel panel on the inside of the deck lid really shows off the engine well.

One of the biggest drawbacks to the class five motor in my car is the carburetor. I’ve tinkered with Solex 30 and with the help from my buddy, Tom, the motor runs very good, but the idle circuit won’t allow the engine to idle below 1400 r.p.m. Tom says this is because of the radical cam that’s in the engine.

Secondly, at high r.p.m. the motor is starving for fuel so I guess it’s time for a different carb setup. I have a set of Dellorto 40’s but unfortunately the frame structure around the engine doesn’t allow enough room for these carbs. I’ve read a lot of articles, and talked to a lot of different people, about what they think would work the best and everyone seems to have a different solution to my problem. The blower will be a great setup but this means that I will have to build a whole new motor, which is completely out of my budget for now.  Well after months of research I’ve decided to listen to Tom. He guaranteed me that he will make a single Webber 44 run great with no hesitation problems, so what more could I want… So out comes the Visa card and let’s spend a little more money.

Tom did a great job for me and after tinkering with the jets etc. for a few hours the motor runs great and performs much better than before. I built a new heater box to draw heat from the cylinder heads to warm the carb. and intake so that just about finishes the carb. change.

I still have a few weeks before the first event that I want to go to so I bought an aluminum fan shroud from  E-Bay, and spent a few hours polishing and installing it. It looks much better and doesn’t have the sharp edges that the cheap chrome unit had.

Another thing that I needed to change was the underside of the deck lid. The aluminum was pretty dull and the shape of it didn’t allow me to polish it very well so I made a polished stainless steel insert that fits inside of the lid. I think it really shows off the motor and finishes the engine compartment.

The final touch is the Rat Fink decal to add to my rat theme. People always ask about the rat and I’ve got to tell them about the condition of the car when I bought it, and also about the inhabitants of the car when I brought it home.
