V-Rod Home

Three months to the day since I brought the monster home.
I've still got a few bugs to work out, but at least it drives.
Four days later the car is at it's first show. Day On The Green in Petaluma. 7-6-01

With the wiring done and all of the bolts tight, I took my first drive. It was July 2nd, exactly three months to the day since I brought the project home.  I had four days left to work out some bugs before I debuted the car at The Day On The Green, and I still had nearly two weeks before the birthday party.

The clutch was slipping, the slave cylinder for the clutch was leaking, the shifter wasn’t locking out reverse, but at least it was drivable.

Day On The Green was fun because the Volks-Rod is so unusual most people didn’t know what it was. It was fun to stand aside and watch people’s response. A couple of guys in particular walked around and around the car trying to look through the louvers in the hood trying to figure what made it go. Suddenly one of the guys spotted the V-Dub motor in the back and said “Oh it’s a kit car” and walked away. Yes it is a kit car, I can’t argue that, but I take pride in knowing that at least a bit of it is mine.

I made it to the Day On The Green and the birthday party and had a blast but it took another month before I got all of the bugs worked out.
