V-Rod Home

Boy have I been waiting for this
Everything is back from the chrome shop and the front axle goes on first.
Now the disc brakes and steering box. So far so good.

With the parts back from Sparky’s and most of the chrome pieces from the chrome shop, I am ready for the final assembly, at last. I still have about a month before the party so I’m looking pretty good. I built a table to assemble the car, so that I can move it and get under the car easily.  I’m not as young and nimble as I used to be.

I started with the front axle and suspension. The torsion bar is one of the two used in a V-Dub front end. It needs to be inserted into the front cross member then the torsion arms fitted to the ends. The friction shock caps then hold everything in place. With this done the front radius rods can be bolted to the axle. Next the axle can be bolted to the torsion arms, and then the radius rods fastened to the frame. The front-end alignment adjustments will be made at a later time.

The steering box was mounted next. Then the tie rod and drag link were bolted in place.

I had to order three sets of disc brakes before I got the parts that I wanted, but they look very good and I know they will work well. I wasn’t sure where the proportioning valve needed to be. The front end is so light that I may need to cut the pressure to the front brakes, which is the opposite from normal, so I left a space for the valve on both ends of the brake line system. As it turned out I did not need a proportioning valve at all and the brakes are perfect.
