I began to disassemble the car with a fury. I figured
maybe if I finish it quickly enough maybe she wont think anything about it.
Maybe I can even finish it before any of the Visa bills come in and by that
time the car will look so great that she wont care.
Eventually I came back to reality and
hoped that after thirty-five years of marriage maybe shes use to my obsessive
behavior. Well lets go with that.
So the car is stripped down to the
chassis with the bare body on it and I charge ahead. The Corvair steering box
has got to go, so I will mount a Datsun 210 box that I had in stock. The Datsun
box has a much longer sector shaft so it will allow me to raise the steering
column to provide more room for my feet. I reused the pedal assembly but needed
to change the master cylinder unit that came with the car. It was an old G.M.
dual brake and clutch assembly with a giant cylinder bore. I changed the front
brakes from the extremely heavy drum brakes to some very clean small disc
brakes. I kept the torsion bar front suspension, as it seemed to be a pretty
good setup, although I needed to lower the front end about five inches, so I
will need to do some serious rework on the front axle. All of the chrome that
was on the car was so rusted that I needed to replace most of it but a very few
pieces can be saved and replated. The rear shocks are off a Jaguar rear end so
if I needed to replace them, they are replaceable, but for now I will try to
cut all of the corners that I can.
